How you can Replace a Missing Light Fixture Cover for under $20.
69Great use for an Extra Fruit Bowl
Our Frugal Fix for a Missing Light Fixture Cover.
If you look at something long enough... you just may come up with something that could fix the problem.
It bothered me for a while that the cover to the light fixture in our hallway was missing. We didn't notice it when we bought the house... along with a few other things that needed fixing. After searching the Home Improvement Centers for a solution and getting sticker shock from the prices of new light fixtures, we just let it go for a while. Prices ranged from $89.00 to over $149.00.
One day as I was dusting, I took a long hard look at a bowl of artificial fruit that I was cleaning. I asked my husband if he could drill a hole in the bowl to fit over the threaded rod of the fixture. He said he could and bought a 1/2" carbide spear point glass drill bit. I'll just let the pictures tell you the rest of the story.
If you are in a similar situation and don't have an extra fruit bowl, take a trip to a thrift store and for a few dollars you should be able to find something to fit your needs. Between the drill bit and the bowl it should not cost more than $20 or somewhere around that amount. Be sure to use the recommended UL wattage for your size fixture.
Just think, if you happen to need an extra bowl at a dinner party, look up... you can always take it down and borrow it for a while.. and you won't have to remember where you put it either!

You are very creative. This reminds me of "the light bulb" that a cartoon character sees when they come up with a good idea!
Great ideas / quick read / nice photos.
What a great idea... I wanted to try it, and now I know that it works.

That is a great idea! We all have bowls we don't use. I especially love the color of your bowl.
What a great, creative idea.
Now that's ingenious.
Way to go. Smart.
