A friend of mine gives me the conditioner that comes with her hair dye. I also use the cheapest hair conditioner that I can get, usually at the dollar store. (You will need 2 cups of the conditioner or 2 cups of your favorite fabric conditioner.)

Homemade Fabric Softner in 5 Easy Steps:

Here are the items that you will need:

1 cup Baking Soda

6 cups White Vinegar

6 cups Hot Tap Water

2 cups cheap hair conditioner or 2 cups of your favorite store bought fabric softener

Here are the 5 Easy Steps:

Step 1. In a 4-5 gallon bucket add 1 Cup of Any Brand Baking Soda.

Step 2. Add 1 Cup of White Vinegar (you will be using 6 total cups of white vinegar for this recipe.)

Step 3. Add 6 Cups of Hot Tap Water

Step 4. Add 5 Cups of White Vinegar

Step 5. Add 2 cups of low cost Hair Conditioner or 2 cups of your favorite fabric softener.

Follow the above steps. Stir, fill your containers and give the container a shake or two before you use it. Use the same amount of your homemade softener as you would normally use the store bought brand. I made two batches and it cost me under $4 for both of the pictured containers! This will last the two of us for at least 4 months.

Until we meet again... Francesca27

Thanks MimiKat33, and suzielucy. suzielucy, funny you should ask about the hair dye. I've been working on that for a while now. Only thing I found was Black Walnut drops for brunettes. I'll work it up and post a hub on it as soon as I can. Thanks guys for stopping by my hub.

$4.00 for two gallons! Now that's what I call economical. I'm definitely going to try this.

I'll do it!

I will make me a batch as soon as I can gather the ingredients needed. I make my own detergent, so why not my fabric softener? Saving money helps for survival these days with the sky high prices of the things we use daily! Thanks!

Dear Selena: White Distilled Vinegar will work fine. I just made my softener for the winter two weeks ago and that is the vinegar I used. Don't forget to shake up the bottle before each use. Enjoy!
